As the investigation into the Red Fort blast intensifies, authorities have turned their attention to Dr. Shaheen Shahid's former spouse, Zafar Hayat. He has been arrested on allegations of involvement with a 'white-collar' terrorist module linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Officials from the Crime Branch conducted an inquiry at Hayat's office in Kanpur.
Hayat revealed that his marriage to Shaheen, originally from Lucknow, ended in 2013. He stated, 'Our marriage was arranged. Since our separation in 2013, I have had no contact with her.'
Circumstances Surrounding Their Divorce
He elaborated on the reasons for their divorce, clarifying that there were no disputes between them. After their marriage, Shaheen moved to Kanpur, and they both began their respective practices. The marriage fell apart because Shaheen expressed a desire to relocate to Europe or Australia, believing it would provide better job opportunities and a brighter future for them. However, Hayat was unwilling to leave India.
Family Insights
Providing further details about his family, Hayat mentioned that they have two children. Since Shaheen left their home during the divorce, the children now reside with him. He has chosen not to inform them about the recent news regarding their mother.
When asked if he ever suspected Shaheen of holding extremist views during their marriage, he firmly replied, 'Absolutely not, never. We are educated and liberal individuals who have lived peacefully as members of society. There is nothing shocking in what is coming to light now, as there is no longer any emotional connection.'
